Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of the brain rot phenomenon in TikTok usage on students' self-awareness. The term brain rot refers to a condition characterized by decreased cognitive focus and reflective ability caused by excessive consumption of short-form digital content. This research employed a quantitative approach using a survey method. The population of this study consisted of active students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sampit who use the TikTok application. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, involving 80 respondents. The research instrument was a questionnaire using a Likert scale consisting of 30 items, including 15 items measuring the brain rot variable and 15 items measuring the self-awareness variable. Data were analyzed using the statistical software IBM SPSS Statistics 23 through validity tests, reliability tests, normality tests, and simple linear regression analysis. The results indicate that the brain rot phenomenon in TikTok usage has a significant effect on students' self-awareness with a significance value of 0.003 < 0.05. The coefficient of determination shows that the brain rot variable contributes 38.2% to the variation in students' self-awareness. These findings suggest that excessive TikTok usage may influence students’ reflective abilities, behavioral control, and awareness of their own actions. Therefore, it is important for students to manage their social media usage wisely in order to minimize negative cognitive and psychological impacts.
